How Long Does It Take To Recover From Liposuction?

The truth is, the answer varies. My approach to liposuction is highly personalized, so I look at your unique needs and aesthetic goals and customize your procedure accordingly. This may involve focusing on localized fat pockets in one area or treating multiple areas of the body, such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, or arms. Your recovery largely depends on the number of areas being treated, the volume of fat removed, your underlying health, and your individual healing rate.

Liposuction Recovery Time

While every patient’s recovery varies, here’s what you can generally expect during your recovery.

Immediately after surgery:

  • Mild to moderate discomfort is normal 1 to 3 days post-op, including bruising, swelling, and soreness.
  • You’ll wear compression garments as directed to minimize swelling and promote healing.
  • While you should prioritize rest, gentle walks boost your circulation to prevent blood clots.

1 week after surgery:

  • The discomfort subsides, and you should feel mostly “back to yourself.”
  • You can return to work, but you still need to refrain from exercise.
  • Continue to wear your compression garments to prevent “lumpy” areas from forming.

2 to 4 weeks after surgery:

  • Bruising and swelling significantly subside.
  • You can bid farewell to your compression garments.
  • Return to your regular routine and physical activities.

Does Combining Procedures Increase Recovery Time?

Yes, combining liposuction with other body contouring procedures, such as breast augmentation, a breast lift, and a tummy tuck as part of mommy makeover surgery, may lengthen your recovery timeline. Many people combine procedures with liposuction to address multiple concerns during a single surgery because it requires only one recovery window. The effects of combination surgery are often synergistic, and they ultimately save you recovery time (and money)!

Does Liposuction Leave Scars?

Many patients have questions about liposuction healing and scarring, but fortunately, scarring is minimal. In addition to using tiny incisions, I discreetly place them so they are well concealed within your natural body contours. After surgery, your scars gradually fade until they are inconspicuous.

Is Smartlipo Recovery Shorter?

Smartlipo® is a technique that accelerates healing after fat removal while producing dramatically sculpted contours. Unlike traditional liposuction, Smartlipo uses laser energy to liquefy unwanted fat. This innovative approach makes it easier to suction the fat away through tinier incisions. Such a minimally invasive approach reduces discomfort and trauma to surrounding areas, resulting in a shorter recovery period. Patients typically experience less bruising and achieve firmer, well-defined contours.

Liposuction Recovery Tips

Adhering to your post-op protocol after liposuction (or any body contouring procedure) is essential to ensure proper results. Follow these tips to ease and enhance recovery and healing:

  • Plan ahead by filling prescriptions, stocking up on supplies, and setting up a comfortable recovery area at home before surgery.
  • Wear compression garments as directed to regulate blood flow and ensure smooth contours.
  • Wear loose clothing over compression garments to aid healing and maintain your comfort.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking more water than usual after surgery.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet to ensure your body gets the proper nutrients to recover and combat inflammation.
  • Attend follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and address any concerns early on.
  • Manage pain and swelling with pain medication as directed and cool compresses.
  • Try lymphatic massages a few weeks post-op to relieve fluid within the body and promote smoother contours.
  • Have patience and be sure to give your body the time it needs to heal before you return to your regular routine.
