SKINPEN®

Scars, textural irregularities, and other superficial skin concerns can often be treated effectively—and gently—with SkinPen. This form of microneedling is loved by NYC patients who want a less invasive skin resurfacing option that doesn’t sacrifice results. SkinPen is a simple in-office procedure that uses your skin’s ability to heal itself to create a beautiful, even tone.

To find out if SkinPen microneedling in New York City is right for you, request a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sterry or call  (212) 249-4020.

What is SkinPen?

SkinPen is a small device, about the size and shape of a writing pen, that’s used for microneedling. At the tip of SkinPen is a cartridge of very small, sterile, single-use needles. The needles penetrate the outermost layers of skin, forming a number of micro-injuries. As the skin heals, it over-produces its own collagen, smoothing away existing aesthetic concerns. SkinPen is a wonderful option for treating the following:

  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars
  • Discoloration
  • Enlarged pores
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Mild laxity or looseness
  • Burn scars

Depending on the significance of your concerns, your lifestyle, and other factors, you may be a better option for another form of resurfacing, such as IPL or laser skin resurfacing.

Your Treatment with SkinPen

SkinPen is a relatively comfortable procedure that we perform here in Dr. Sterry’s NYC office. Your provider first applies a topical numbing cream to improve your comfort. The numbing cream combined with Skinpen’s extremely fine needles ensure a nearly painless experience.

In addition to stimulating your skin’s healing capabilities, microneedling with SkinPen makes your skin exceptionally receptive to the active ingredients in topical skin care products. Each micro-perforation creates a channel to your skin’s lower layers, enabling products like retinol, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to reach deep beneath your skin for maximum effect.

Recovery & Results

After your SkinPen treatment, you can return to your regular daily activities as soon as you’d like. It’s normal for your skin to feel tender and look a bit inflamed, but these symptoms typically go away on their own within a couple of days. Over the next few weeks, your collagen stores replenish themselves, and your skin condition gradually improves. Depending on the specific concern you want to treat, you may require a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. During your initial consultation at Dr. Sterry’s office, you and your skincare provider will review your options.

SkinPen FAQ

I’ve seen microneedling devices for home use. How is SkinPen different?

Most microneedling devices sold for home use are cylindrically shaped and rolled across the skin. The position of the needles on these devices causes them to enter the skin at an angle, creating wider perforations and, in many cases, more bleeding and injury than necessary. SkinPen’s needles enter the skin at a straight angle, minimizing trauma and ensuring beautiful results with less downtime. The needles can also be adjusted to penetrate at different depths, giving you customized results.

Can you help me choose the right post-procedure products?

Absolutely. We carry our own line of skincare products, many of which are appropriate for post-procedure skin. Your provider can help you choose an option that protects and nourishes your skin while it heals.

Will people be able to tell that I’ve had a procedure?

People will notice that your skin looks better, but it won’t be obvious that you’ve had cosmetic work done. Instead, plan on your skin looking brighter, smoother, and more evenly toned. The SkinPen procedure does not create results that appear obvious or artificial.
